The Heron Association Southern Championships were held on a glorious sunny day, Saturday 4 June, at Chipstead Sailing Club. A total of 13 boats participated in the event, of which 11 were sailed by Association members.
20 Richmond Village Twelve boats took to the water for the first race which, with light winds from the north west began with a committee boat start at the east end of the lake. Martin Treadway led from the start, with Peter Moulton vying for second place with Mike Pickett and then Nigel Darby fourth. Jon Hunt was in fifth with the rest of the fleet spread out behind, having many private battles and many changes of place. At the finish, after 3 laps, Martin Treadway came in 1st well ahead of Peter Moulton, 2nd, Mike Pickett, 3rd, and Nigel Darby, 4th. After lunch, the wind was again light from the north west so there was no change of course and another committee boat start. At the first windward mark, the same five boats were having a tussle to be first round; Martin Treadway achieving this. However, on the run down the lake there was nothing between these leading boats. On the second lap Martin Treadway got away just ahead of Peter Moulton, with the others now quite widely strung out in the order: Nigel Darby, Mike Pickett and then Jon Hunt. On the third beat up the lake the wind dropped, Martin sat in a hole and Nigel slipped past into 1st place, with Mike Pickett 2nd, Martin 3rd and Peter Moulton 4th. This meant that Martin Treadway and Mike Pickett now had 4 points each so the third and last race would be the decider. This last race started from opposite the race hut which, as those who have visited Chipstead will know, is set high above the lake and near the main club building. It started with a short beat to the windward mark, at the north end of the lake. Martin Treadway passed this first, just ahead of Jon Hunt. There was then a long run down the lake, with five boats in a bunch. All appeared to round the leeward mark together in very dirty wind but Martin and Jon managed to pull away into clear wind for the beat back up the lake. However the wind then dropped again and all the boats slowed down. As time was short the OOD decided to shorten the race and Mike Pickett slipped through the fleet, apparently with his own wind, to finish in front, very near the pontoons, followed by Nigel Darby 2nd, Jon Hunt 3rd, Peter Moulton 4th, and Martin Treadway 5th. The table of results opposite shows all the boats which participated in the event but the main placings only relate to those sailed by Association members. However the table does show the places which the other two boats would have been given in the individual races. | Boat | Helm | Crew | Club | Race 1 | Race 2 | Race 3 | Points | Final Position | | 9812 | M.Pickett | C.Pickett | Up River | 3 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 1 | | 10061 | N.Darby | J.Polston | Eyott | 4 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 2 | | 9866 | M.Treadway | D.Palmer | Chipstead | 1 | 3 | 5 | 4 | 3 | | 10019 | P.Moulton | E.Morse | Chipstead | 2 | 4 | 4 | 6 | 4 | | 7 | J.Hunt | V.Hunt | Chipstead | 5 | 5 | 3 | 8 | 5 | | 9338 | M.Rowntree | A.Rowntree | Chipstead | 7 | 7 | 6 | 13 | 6 | | 10044 | P.Lund | M.Lund | Nantwich | 9 | 6 | 7 | 13 | 7 | | 8432 | R.Goldsmith | K.Goldsmith | Chipstead | 6 | 8 | DNS | 14 | 8 | | 1529 | A.Tormey | K.Brett | Chipstead | 8 | 9 | DNS | 17 | 9 | | 9045 | P.Marshall | P.Marshall | Chipstead | 10 | 10 | DNS | 20 | 10 | | 2202 | J.Darby | J.Senior | Crawley | 11 | 11 | DNS | 22 | 11 | | 8651 | S.Poston | C.Posford | Chipstead | (7) | (13) | DNS | | DNQ | | 8428 | A Dale | A Rowntree | Eyott / CSC | DNS | (6) | (1) | | DNQ | Trophies were awarded as follows: | Overall winner | Bell trophy | Mike Pickett | Up River YC | | Winner – 1st race | Alfred Bossi | Martin Treadway | Chipstead SC | | Winner – 2nd race | Marlow Salver | Nigel Darby | Eyott SC | | Winner – 3rd race | Croydon Anchor | Mike Pickett | Up River SC | | 1st Lady Helm | Ladies’ Trophy | Alison Tormey | Chipstead SC | | 1st Chipstead boat | Elise Stern Salver | Martin Treadway | Chipstead SC |
