The Heron is a 'One Design' dinghy class, however there is a wide range of options written into the rules. These include:
Wooden framed, plywood epoxy, GRP, FRP or composite hulls
Gunter or Bermudan rig
Wood or Metal Spars
Jib or Genoa
Built-in or inflated bag buoyancy
Alternative rudder blade shapes and sizes
Many possible cockpit layouts
A wide choice of fittings
* Portsmouth Yardstick:
For 2013 the RYA has allocated a PY of 1345 for single-handed Herons, which is a drop of one point. They have not issued a PY for crewed Herons owing to very low returns for this combination. In previous years we have recommended a PY of 1363 for crewed Herons. We now recommend that this is also dropped one point, to 1362, to maintain the differential between crewed and single-handed boats. For Heron open and championship meetings where a mix of crewed and single-handed Herons are sailed a PY of 1345 and 1362 are to be used for the single-handed and crewed boats respectively.
