Hi Paul,
I should be around on Sunday. The reason that I declared my interest early is that I am coming by train and you have to book so early to get a train ticket that is affordable. It would be great to meet some other Heron sailors.

I think it's technically known as the Dinghy Exhibition isn't it? (the Boat Show tends to be for motorised floating gin palaces). I hope there'll be a Heron stand there. Are you planning to go on the Saturday or the Sunday? I'm hoping to get there but haven't sorted anything out yet. |

I couldn't agree more. The other advantage I find when single-handing is that I'm facing the right way to un-cleat the genoa when tacking. |

Hi Paul
The rules are ambiguous and I think need a closer look at. Unfortunately to much is by implication. However, there is a comment on a drawing that the jammer is not allowed. It is not listed the handbook and I suppose the intention was to keep it the same as stern sheeting. If they can't jam the mainsheet then the centre main boats must not either.
I would support you in a motion to allow centre mainsheet jammers. Although the agenda has been published there is nothing in the constitution which says how lat a motion may be put to the meeting! No vote would be taken but I see no reason why it could not be discussed.
Cheers

Hi David,
Thanks for the clarification. Perhaps the best thing would be to leave it until next year and submit the motion in good time. |

CENTRE-MAIN SHEETING
Hi,
I am an unabashed advocate of centre-mainsheeting. The difficulties about the mainsheet when run to a block above your head or just in front of it can be overcome. I was sailing the other day with a HERON just behind me, turning round a mark of the course. Suddenly there was a bang and a jolt and the Heron hit my transom. My guess was that at the critical time of the tack with the boom swinging over the Heron helm with a conventional transom sheeting arrangement was looking astern. I think sailors should be more interested in where they are going than where they have come from.!!

HI,
As A NEW BOY to the class I would not want to propose a change to the main-sheet jammer rule but happy to second a proposal. Can this be done by email via the website ?

Paul,
thanks for your reply - much help.
I have recieved another email over night - whuch was great.
Evidently only the head to mid foot meaurement is diffenrent by between AUS and UK Jibs.
I have emailed PINBAX to see if theyd make me a "Aussie" one for the set price.
Does anyone have any good contacts at PINBAX?
thanks

UK vs Australian Jib & Main
Hi Alex,
A UK jib would measure under Australian rules. However, as I understand it, in Oz you tend to cut the jib short on the luff to bring the clew closer to the deck.
A UK mainsail would not measure under Australian rules. A quick list of some of the differences:
1) Leech: UK=4720, AUS=4690
2) Headboard: UK=115mm, AUS=not allowed
3) Battens: UK=lower 2 battens max length of 610mm, top batten length unrestricted (we use full length top battens), AUS=batten measurement is by max length of 610mm on batten pocket rather than the batten itself
4) Cross/girth measurements: These are specified so differently that it's hard to make a real comparison but from photographs it's clear that the UK mains have a much larger 3/4 height measurement than the AUS mains.
It may be worth contacting P&B and asking if they'll make you suit to Australian rules. |

UK vs Australian Jib & Main
Hello,
I am in the UK at Xmas and thinking of buying a PinBax jib & main.
But first I am wanting to know if it is the same dimensions as the Aussie ones.
Can anyone help with UK jib & main dimensions?
Cheers,
Alex

I find the rules very ambiguous as to whether or not a mainsheet jammer is allowed. The rule which allows centre main talks about the block having to be attached at the centreline of the boat. Does this mean you can't have a jammer? Don't know. I think you'd need to email the class association to get a definitive answer. One thing I will say is that I believe that jammers should be allowed so if it turns out they're not then I'm happy to second a motion to have them allowed. When I converted my boat to centre-main this year I did consider asking about this but as the centreboard capping on my old boat is too narrow to mount a jammer on without a fair bit of woodwork I went for an easier solution and didn't bother following it up.
I believe the asymmetric kite trials are still on-going. No doubt there will be a report submitted to AGM about it. |

MAIN SHEET JAMMERS---ARE THEY ALLOWED ?
Hi,
i have an old main sheet jammmer. As I have centre-main sheeting I am tempted to try it out on my Heron. Is it allowed under the rules ?
Secondly i know years ago the committee deliberated on allowing asymmetric spinnakers. Did the committee come to a conclusion ?
anybody know about these topics?
Thanks,
David Hinks

Hi David,
My boat has gunter rig but my technique for stepping the mast should also work for a bermuda rig. I attach the shrouds first and then flip the mast up. It helps to have the boat bow down and if it's windy stern to wind. Mark rounding is something which comes with practice. In fact you would get a lot benefit from going out for a session of mark-rounding practice. All the best. |

Hi Paul,
thanks for your quick reply to my query. As to going to Opens I feel i need to smarten up a few procedures such as stepping the mast single-handed (anybody got any tips ? )and general mark-rounding first. i find I am as fast as most Toppers on the beat, but loose out when rounding marks, because I am hamfisted in pulling in the genoa.
Thanks again

Hi David,
Yes dangle poles are allowed on Herons. Many of the top boats use them. Congratulations on your new boat. Will we see you at any of the open meetings next year? |

Well that was a very enjoyable meeting in spite of the drizzle and light, fluky wind It was great to make some new acquaintances and to renew a couple of old ones. Thanks to Redesmere for putting on such an enjoyable event |

DANGLY POLES
Hi,
Just spent part of the kid's inheritance and bought myself a new frp Butler Heron. Some of the National 12's at our club have a 'dangly pole'which is a pole permanently fixed from the clew of the jib to the spinnaker eye on the front of the mast. When they are on a dead run the pole is lowered by an endless cord and the other end of the pole handily pushes out the jib or genoa to one side. Is there anything in the rules which prohibits the use of such a device on my Heron ?
