The weather for this event could not have been better: sunshine; temperatures in the 80s F; and good steady winds of Force 3 and 4 with the occasional gust of Force 5. There was a healthy turnout of 13 boats, with entries from 6 different clubs: 4 of the boats were crewed, the rest single-handed. With the wind being from the east the races had Committee boat starts from the far side of the lake from the clubhouse, giving long initial beats down to the No.1 mark. This pattern, and course, was maintained throughout the day.

For the first race, the starboard end of the start line was crowded, with Peter Moulton first away followed closely by John Bennett. John made the windward mark first but, by the second windward leg, Matthew Pickett and Jon Hunt were harassing him for the lead. These three then shared the lead until the end of the first beat of the second lap when Matthew out-manoeuvred John at that mark. He then kept the lead, followed by Jon and Verna. However all three then rounded the wrong mark at the final mark before the finish though Jon and John realised their mistakes part way down about and thus, unlike Matthew (who was disqualified), were able to go about to achieve a result. The lead positions were thus taken by Rob Stringer and Peter Moulton who had originally been tussling for fourth place.

In the second race, after the lunch break, the Chase SC boats got off to a good start, with Emma Eardley leading followed by John Bennett and Rob Stringer (in an old borrowed boat). They were followed by Matthew Pickett and then John Spragg (sailing with a borrowed rudder). This order was maintained until the penultimate mark which John Bennett and Emma took too wide, allowing Matthew to slip through followed by Rob and John Spragg. These three then maintained their new positions to the finish, with John Bennett just seconds behind in fourth place.

This left the result open, with the final race being the decider. Matthew made his best start of the day, with Rob Stringer in very close contention, followed by John Bennett, Jon Hunt and John Spragg in a close group. Matthew and Rob then pulled away from the others until Rob was badly hit by one of the Toppers (in a parallel Topper event) – this incident putting him out of the race. Matthew kept the lead crossing the line 4 seconds ahead of John Bennett who was just a nose ahead of John Spragg. However Jon Hunt, with his crew Verna, had been closing the gap down the last leg and beat both of the Johns on handicap. (The results were calculated using the ‘old’ yardstick of 1343 for single-handed boats).

Most of the remainder of the fleet enjoyed their own battles with those boats nearest to them, with no ‘one boat’ trailing alone. Two of the entries were experiencing their first Open event. There was sympathy for David Bryden who had a problem with his boat in the first two races. The Association gained two new memberships from Chase SC and one from Sandwell SC.
