The Heron is a 'One Design' dinghy class, however there is a wide range of options written into the rules. These include:
- Wooden framed, plywood epoxy, GRP, FRP or composite hulls
- Gunter or Bermudan rig
- Wood or Metal Spars
- Jib or Genoa
- Built-in or inflated bag buoyancy
- Alternative rudder blade shapes and sizes
- Many possible cockpit layouts
- A wide choice of fittings
* Portsmouth Yardstick:
The RYA allocated a PY of 1363, until 2005, for crewed boats, and the association provided an adjusted handicap for single handed racing. However, in 2005 the RYA have allocated a PY of 1355 for single handed boats, but not allocated a PY to crewed boats. The association has not yet decided exactly how to handle the new yardstick.
