Can I sleep in my Heron on the water, without capsizing whilst lying quietly at anchor? or do I need to come ashore to sleep? - if it is possible can the floorboards be used to make a platform of sorts?

Again I'm here with comment not an answer - if someone has tried it please post

The floor boards would seem fine for sleeping on to me. they'll keep you off the bilges and are probably long enough. However - what would you do about the twarts? They are structural parts of the boat - you shouldn't got removing them and that means sleeping under them. If you did capsize would you be abel to get out?

The alternative is to sleep on top of the twarts / seats but then you are actually quite high up and so the centre of gravity moves...

Have you tried anchoring during the day and lying down on the floor / at seat level to see how stable she feels? If you do - please post back - this is an intersting question!

I'm too big a wimp to try any of that - find a NICE B&B and book in for the night!!

Calum

Hello,
I'm sure I read something some years ago, possibly by Nicholson, that the Mirror was successfully adapted for sleeping. In that instance he slept on top of the thwarts with a boards system.
If you can do it in a Mirror, I would be surprised if you can't sort it out in a Heron.
Some sort of boom-up cover would be beneficial to allow a bit of headroom inside.
Do let us know what you try.
Good luck with it.
Regards
Neil

I've done it a couple of times, in both cases because I forgot the time!

I have a new epoxy/ply heron, which doesn't have floorboards. But I keep a hiker's sleeping mat rolled up under the foredeck, and that's fine. If I'd actually intended to sleep out, I'd have taken a sleeping bag too :-[

I'm sea-sailing (Hastings), and the Heron bobs about a bit. But I actually found it rather restful....

I've also've done it a couple of times, in both cases because I forgot the time!

I have a new epoxy/ply heron, which doesn't have floorboards. I find the heron heaves to very well, using the end of the mainsheet to lash the rudder over. Once spent 2 1/2 hours sleeping like that, waiting for the wind.

Next summer I plan to overnight on purpose. Guess I'll have to investigate lights - any suggestions?

HI

There is a good book called the amaazing voyage of Jack de Crow all about a guy who sails his Mirror dinghy from the upper Severn to the Black sea !!!!!

He explains the modifications he made to sleep on board, including a boom tent and slatts across the thwarts to sleep on which roll up and store away during the day.

Have thought the Heron would modify well but have not tried it yet. If the air bag in the bow space could be replaced with a water tight locker it would certainly give enough storage for kit and gear for a night or two.

Perhaps next summer ?!
